What is Tensile Testing?

Tensile testing is a common test method used in force measurement and material testing. “Tensile testing is used primarily to determine the mechanical behavior of a component, part or material under static, axial loading”.

Material testing measures the mechanical properties of materials. Tensile testing is used to help select material specifications to ensure quality. Tensile properties such as strength, elongation, deformation reaction, and ability to withstand applied force over time are measured to become quantifiable and qualifiable. The sample’s shape changes when a load is applied. During a tensile test, it is important to make note of the change in dimension at various applied forces. This helps determine performance and suitability when selecting materials.

Force measurement testing looks for the maximum force value. This test often measures the amount of stress needed to cause deformation, the amount of deformation before fracturing, or the maximum stress the sample can withstand. For quality and safety reasons force measurement testing is commonly done in an engineering laboratory; However, with the increase in recognition, it’s been more common on production floors.

Tensile testing can be performed with very basic measuring equipment such as a handheld force gauge, or with a high-end system equipped with software and ancillary instruments such as an extensometer. The force gauge measures the pull force applied to determine maximum force. The systems are able to test more precisely and use large volumes of data to generate more accurate measurements.
